How does Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture work?

Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture works using very fine, small needles that are inserted into specific areas of the face. The process of inserting these small needles into the skin increases the production of collagen and elastin, which helps to smooth out those fine lines and wrinkles.

Furthermore, the insertion of the needles into the face brings blood flow to these areas which allows for nutrients and moisture to travel to the surface of the skin to help promote healing and regeneration of new dermal tissue. When the skin starts to heal and new skin regenerates, the appearance of acne scarring, skin spots, aging spots can begin to reduce.

This procedure has also been shown to increase skin tone, elasticity, and texture.

Besides targeting fine lines and wrinkles, what else can Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture do for me?

Facial acupuncture can also help with sleep disturbances, reducing stress and anxiety as well as pain. These small needles can also help with jaw pain (TMJ disorder) and muscle tightness.

What can I expect from a Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture session?

The first appointment is an Initial Assessment with Treatment, 75 mins in length. Our Naturopathic Doctor will go over current health conditions and health and treatment goals. The second part of the visit includes acupuncture as well as a facial massage using gua sha and jade rolling that promotes lymphatic drainage, reduces muscle tension and reduces puffiness.

Follow up appointments are 60 mins long and include the facial acupuncture procedure as well as the facial / lymphatic massage. Our Naturopathic Doctor will also follow up with any previous concerns that may have come up during the Initial assessment.

The lymphatic massage helps to reduce swelling and puffiness in the face, as well as help to detoxify the skin of dirt, toxins, and other impurities.

Is Facial Rejuvenation (Cosmetic) Acupuncture safe?

Yes! Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is safe when it is performed by a licensed professional. It is 100% natural because you are not injecting toxins into the skin, using chemicals or harmful lasers.  Facial Acupuncture is not recommended for those who experience severe migraines, are concurrently receiving chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, or for those who have had cosmetic surgery within the past four months.

Certain types of prescription medication may also prevent the doctor from performing the procedure, such as Accutane. A free 15 minute consultation with our Naturopathic Doctor is recommended prior to booking the Initial appointment, should there be concerns with current medications or health conditions.

The most common side effect is redness near the insertion sites, the degree of which varies from patient to patient. Slight soreness near the areas may also occur as well as slight bleeding (which typically only lasts a few seconds). Other less common side effects that some patients have experienced are headaches, dizziness, fatigue, bruising – these typically resolve themselves within a couple of days.

Nope! The entire procedure should not hurt. You will feel a slight prick when the needles are inserted, but that’s about it! You may actually fall asleep during it!

Depending on the goal, typically 6 sessions are required, 1 session per week. After 6 sessions, the Naturopathic Doctor will reassess the process thus far and determine future treatment plans. Typically, patients then come in every 1 to 3 months for maintenance.

The benefits of this form of acupuncture varies from person to person, just like most natural treatments, however the results from 10-14 sessions can last for years. Many patients have noticed a difference in their skin’s “glow” as well as their skin’s hydration and muscle tone after 3-4 sessions. It is important to note that repeated treatments are required in order to notice significant improvements in skin elasticity and texture.

Naturopathic Medicine services may be covered by some insurance plans. It is essential to check with your insurance provider to determine the extent of coverage for Naturopathic Medicine treatments. In some cases, a referral from a primary care physician may be required for coverage.

Facial acupuncture is best for anyone, both male and female, over 21-years old.

Naturopathic Doctors typically complete a four-year, post-graduate program at an accredited naturopathic medical school. Their education includes biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, and various naturopathic modalities, such as nutrition, botanical medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and more. They must also pass national board exams and meet licensing requirements in their jurisdiction to practice as a Naturopathic Doctor.
