Concussion Management Clinic Woodbridge & Vaughan

We Help You Recover Quickly and Safely From a Concussion Injury.

A CONCUSSION is a common head injury that may occur after trauma or while playing sports. Concussions are also known as a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This is an injury that may result from a direct or an indirect blow to the head, face or body causing internal brain alterations and function. Academics have specifically defined Concussions as:

“Concussion is defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces.” 1

We've partnered with SHIFT Concussion Management to provide accurate concussion measures and treatments. Our program is designed to help people who have experienced a concussion recover and resume normal activities as quickly, and safely as possible.

Concussions injure the brain due to the sudden shifting of the brain within the skull. This shifting of the brain is what causes the brain cells to have altered function and metabolic properties that spirals the victim into symptoms that range from minor to severe. This means that there is no actual brain damage but the cells of brain that undergo changes.

The blow to the body, face or head can cause rotational injury to the brain as well as flexion/extension injury that can lead to shearing of the nerve fibers and spinal cord. Symptoms of Concussion are difficult to recognize as signs and symptoms will be present however all imaging scans (CT, MRI) show up as negative and appear to be normal.

Recognition of which signs and symptoms are important as they help decrease the potential of the victim from resuming play and seeking out medical attention.

Concussion Management

First Step

Upon receiving medical attention to assess a concussion the injured person must follow certain steps in order to start the recovery process. The most important criteria in management of concussions is REST.

The injured person must rest both physically and mentally to help the brain rebound from the injury. Every person is different and the duration that the sign/symptoms last varies.

Rest Includes:

  • No Texting
  • No Video Games
  • No TV
  • No Reading
  • No Sports
  • No Bright Lights
  • No Loud Music
  • No Computer
  • No Studying

This regimen of complete rest is something that should be followed at the onset of the injury to help treat abnormal brain function and recover from its metabolic crisis.

The injured person may not need to endure complete rest for an extended period of time because as the signs/symptoms start to diminish the injured person may start an individualized rehabilitation strategy developed by Full Function Rehab & Wellness. School Aged children may need to modify their schedule and school activities to accommodate their healing stages.

Second Step

The second step in Concussion Management is the rehabilitation to ensure the injured person is comfortable performing skills of their sport without relapse of signs/ symptoms. There are critical steps to promote return to physical activity. It is important to note that there is no guarantees as to the duration of these guidelines as all individuals perform differently and recover at different rates.

This Graded Exertion Protocol was developed with recommendations from the 3rd International Conference on Concussions held in Zürich in 2008.

Graded Exertion Protocol

Rehabilitation Stage
Functional Exercise at Each Stage of Rehabilitation
Objective of Each Stage
 1.  No Activity Complete physical and cognitive rest Recovery
 2.  Light Aerobic Exercise Walking, swimming or stationary cycling keeping intensity <70% MHR Increase HR
 3.  Sport-Specific Exercise Skating drills in ice hockey, running in soccer. No   head impact activities Add movement with increased HR
 4.  Non-Contact Training Drills Progression to more complex training drills e.g. Passing drills in football, soccer and ice hockey(May start progressive resistance training) Exercise, coordination and cognitive load
 5.  Full Contact Practice Following medical clearance participate in normal training activities Restore confidence and assess functional skills by coaching staff
 6.  Return to Play Normal Game Play

Each step is based on a 24 hour cycle to determine sign/symptom progression. If while performing these exercises there are any recurrence of symptoms during any stage the injured person must return to the previous step to allow the body to heal.
